Vegreville Alberta 1st Medieval Faire: A Trip Back in Time

A recent summer road trip took us to Vegreville Alberta for their 1st Medieval Faire. Parking was available within a short walking distance from the Stampede grounds. A very long, slow line to enter the grounds could be seen as one approached. As people waited in line they could enjoy the period relevant costumes many adorned. With some patience, once inside the Stampede Grounds, we experienced a trip back in time.

Artisan Market Favorites

A vendor featuring ancient artifacts in the Artisan Market was one of my favorites. The collector / table vendor originally from the Ukraine. He stated he collected the artifacts when he lived in Europe. He highlighted rings of Jesuit Priests with the seals still intact, metal decorative beads that would have been used on horse armor and more. I was able to try on 3000 year old rings worn by Vikings!

Another favourite exhibit shared Viking style cuisine. Homemade cheese was hanging to drain while the hostess collected the whey for use in a dumpling recipe. All the while, delicious aromas from a pork belly sizzling on a homemade smoker filled the air.

Jousting: A Fan Favourite

The grand stands filled up with excited onlookers as the Knights took centre stage with their faithful steeds.

Food Vendors

With line-ups for food and drink vendors being exceptionally long and slow we chose to skip the wait and visit a local eatery instead. Vito’s Steak and Pizza serves up many delicious options. Opting for the indoor restaurant was a wise choice as a big thunder storm rolled through Vegreville just as we were seated.

Distilleries

We enjoyed sampling the products of local distiller artisans like the White Lightning Distillery, and the Stolen Harvest Meadery . The White Lightning Mango Vodka was a patron favorite as people expressed that it tasted like “summer.” Tasting experts paired it with lemonade which was enjoyable. In my opinion it would also pair well with a carbonated water. I also enjoyed the Stolen Harvest Wild Rose Petal, and White Muscadine meads, which were also light, fresh and summery.

Overall, a great time was had!

  1. Fascinating! It reminded me of the trip to Germany where we experienced a Medieval Fair in a castle. It’s great to know that these Alberta towns offer varied activities and amenities. 👍
